What Makes a Holiday Table

These Elements Can Make Your Ordinary Dinnerware Shine

By , About.com Guide

You don’t have to own special dinnerware or create an amazing centerpiece to set a beautiful holiday table. By adding a few inexpensive accessories to your everyday dinnerware, you can create a holiday table that shines.

Take everyday dinnerware all the way though New Year’s by adding a little sparkle. Use beaded placemats or napkins. Run a glittery ribbon down the center of your table or tie each napkin with a shimmery bow. Place a small present wrapped in a metallic paper beside each plate and attach a place card. Fill a bowl with reflective or glittery ornaments, or use small tacks and ribbons and hang them chandelier-style over your table.

Greenery

Even the plainest table can look festive when you add a bit of greenery. And the best thing is that greenery is free! If your yard is lacking, ask neighbors for clippings. And don’t feel that you need to use fir or holly – anything green can evoke a holiday mood. For fragrance, try using herbs like rosemary or sage.

You don't need to go with red and green to have your table look festive and fresh. With a few inexpensive accessories, any color can give off that holiday vibe. An orange and purple table can be a beautiful and unique holiday combination, especially when combined with one of the other touches like greenery or lighting.

Banish the bright overheads. Even in the plainest of settings, candles can evoke a special, celebratory mood. Use unscented candles at the table so friends and family can savor their meal without distractions. And don’t use tall candles or candelabras. Your guests will want to see each other, and you!

Decorator Hint:

Decorate your table with people, for what makes a holiday table most special is when it is surrounded by friends and loved-ones. If you are alone this holiday season, go ahead and set your table! Light a few candles and invite someone else who wouldn’t mind sharing a simple meal. There are many out there who will be thankful that you took the effort.
