Every year at this time, we all begin to compile our lists of resolutions. Most involve the loss of weight (no comment) or more exercise (less comment). And the majority are all but forgotten by March - to be replaced by equal parts of guilt and regret. But this year, I offer a list that is definitely more fun than a diet, and might even help you shed some unwanted pounds. So here are my suggestions for your new year:

1. Buy quality. Buy one quality piece of furniture this year. Notice I said "quality" and not expensive. It may take some research and time, but there are still quality pieces to be had out there for reasonable prices. Check with local cabinetmakers. Some also do furniture pieces. Although some craftsmen can be costly, others can be suprisingly affordable.

2. Refresh. Refresh one room this year with paint, even if only on one wall. A freshly painted room and a new color can lift your spirits and the look of the room - it's Spring in a can!

3. Replace with green. If something (like a kitchen appliance or carpet) has to be replaced this year, replace it with an environmentally responsible alternative. More and more home decor items are being made "green", and not just in color. And as they become more affordable, there is less excuse for decorators on a budget to ignore their use.

4. Recycle. Refinish, reupholster, or repurpose one old piece of furniture this year. Whether it's Aunt Sadie's chest of drawers or a buffet from a yard sale, nothing says individuality, creativity and environmental responsibility like recycling an old eyesore unto a new, usable piece of furniture.

5. Lose Weight. Get rid of one box of clutter each month. Your home will look better, your spirits will be lighter, and you will lose pounds and pounds of unwanted and unneeded "stuff!"

6. Buy passion. Don't spend money on anything this year unless you are passionate about it. Our homes are full of items that are simple "ok" or workable. Why buy more? If you spend your hard-earned and harder-to-save money this year on anything, make sure it is worth the price you pay. Make sure it's something you will still feel the same about in ten years or twenty. If it will be out of style in two, it is too expensive - even at a bargain price.

If by March, you fall off the wagon and buy those "here-today-and-gone-tomorrow" curtains at the discount store just because they were "cheap", get right back on. Remember, "tomorrow is another day", and even Scarlett was able to make something out of those drapes.
