The 10 Best Daybeds of 2024

Durable and stylish daybeds to maximize your space

The Spruce / Jay Wilde

Sofas by day and sleepers by night, daybeds are an ideal solution for multi-use spaces, including home offices, playrooms, basements, and studio apartments. These space-saving pieces are typically the size of a twin or full bed and have three sides to resemble a sofa.

Not all daybeds are created equal, so it's important to choose one that offers both comfort and support, whether you're using it as a sofa or a bed. "You will want a comfortable mattress that can be used for sitting as well as supporting your body when lying down," says sleep specialist Nicole Shallow.

With this buying tip in mind, we spent hours researching the most popular and best-selling options, evaluating construction quality, comfort, upholstery options, aesthetics, and value. We’ve rounded up the most comfortable, stylish, and versatile models on the market—including a few with built-in storage and trundle beds.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall

Room & Board Jasper Daybed

Room & Board Jasper Daybed

Room & Board

What We Like
  • Customizable

  • No mattress needed

  • Arrives fully assembled

  • Great for small spaces

What We Don't Like
  • Inexact sleeper size

  • No backrest

The elegant yet understated Jasper Daybed from Room & Board is a versatile, mid-century modern beauty. It has a sturdy hardwood frame, slender legs, two bolster cushions, and high-resiliency foam cushions wrapped in down and poly fibers. Shallow says a daybed like this "is perfect for a smaller space, [or for] someone who enjoys doing things laying down, or curling up when sleeping." And thanks to the comfy and supportive bench-style cushion, you don't need to buy a mattress separately.

There are two lengths available (71 and 86 inches). Though inexact, they're roughly the size of twin and twin XL sleepers. You can choose between five leg styles and 221 upholstery options, including nearly 200 stain-resistant performance fabrics. The Jasper doesn't have a backrest, so you'll probably want to place it against a wall and get some large cushions to line it for daytime use. Another thing to note is that since this daybed is made-to-order, it'll take a few weeks to ship. But the Jasper arrives fully assembled and will be placed in your room of choice when you select Room & Board’s full-service delivery.

Dimensions: 86 x 35 x 27 inches, 71 x 35 x 27 inches | Seat Height: 19 inches | Mattress Size: 79 x 35 inches, 64 x 35 inches | Materials: Foam and down/poly-fiber cushion, solid wood frame | Upholstery: 221 options available | Trundle Included: No

Best Budget

Vecelo Classic Metal Daybed

Vecelo Classic Metal Daybed Frame

Overstock

What We Like
  • Comes in multiple styles and finishes

  • Durable, heavy-duty metal frame

  • 13 inches of space underneath

What We Don't Like
  • Trundle bed sold separately

At under $200, the Vecelo Classic Metal Daybed makes a great budget pick. The daybed has a heavy-duty metal frame that supports up to 350 pounds of weight. It’s also available in multiple styles and colors to suit your home aesthetic. Plus, the contemporary and charming design is versatile enough to complement almost any decor scheme. And with 13 inches of under-bed clearance, you have ample space for storage or adding a trundle bed, which is sold separately.

Since it's only a frame, you'll have to get your own mattress and backrest cushions. But unlike other daybeds that limit mattress thickness, this one accommodates any twin-size height. It calls for two-person assembly, but considering the wallet-friendly price, we'd say it’s worth the extra effort.

Dimensions: 71 x 41 x 39 inches | Seat Height: 13 inches | Mattress Size: Twin | Materials: Metal | Upholstery: Not applicable | Trundle Included: No

Best Splurge

Interior Define Asher Leather Daybed

Interior Define Asher Leather Daybed

Interior Define

What We Like
  • Customizable

  • No mattress needed

  • White-glove delivery

  • Stylish, modern design

What We Don't Like
  • No backrest

  • Inexact sleeper size

Luxurious, stylish, and versatile, the Asher Leather Daybed from Interior Define is worth the investment. This stunning piece has a wood frame and firm yet soft foam cushions that are topped in your choice of down or down-alternative fill. Available in three lengths and two depths, the customizable dimensions come out to about the size of a twin or full bed. Note that there are no back cushions, so you may need to buy extra for daytime use.

You can also choose from 11 different leg styles and eight leather upholstery colors. This made-to-order daybed will take a few weeks to ship. However, you can buy it now, order a few leather swatches, and then decide on your upholstery later without delaying your shipment. Also, Interior Define offers white-glove delivery, so it arrives fully assembled and placed in your room of choice.

Dimensions: Customizable | Seat Height: 29 inches | Mattress Size: Varies | Materials: Wood frame, foam and down or down-alternative cushions | Upholstery: Eight leather options available | Trundle Included: No

Best with Storage

Mercury Row Anais Upholstered Daybed with Drawers

Mercury Row Anais Upholstered Daybed with Drawers

Wayfair

What We Like
  • Spacious pullout drawers underneath

  • Sleek look

  • Comfortable padded upholstery

What We Don’t Like
  • Assembly required

If you’re looking for an option with extra storage, we recommend the Anais Upholstered Daybed from Mercury Row. The frame is made of solid and engineered wood, which is known for its sturdiness and durability. Underneath, the daybed has two spacious drawers that slide out on smooth-rolling casters. You can use the built-in storage to stash bedding, extra pillows, books, toys, games, or clothes—you name it.

This modern piece fits any standard twin or full mattress. It boasts clean lines that give it a sleek look, and you can choose between five linen or velvet upholstery options. Plus, it has foam padding to ensure a comfortable daybed all around. Its simplistic and stylish design also lends itself to various decor styles, making it a versatile pick. Just a heads up, you may need to recruit a buddy when assembling it.

Dimensions: 79 x 41.5 x 31.5 inches, 79 x 57 x 31.5 inches | Seat Height: 13.5 inches | Mattress Size: Twin, full | Materials: Solid engineered wood frame, foam padding | Upholstery: Five velvet or linen options available | Trundle Included: No

Best with Trundle

PB Kids Carter Slipcover Daybed

PB Kids Carter Slipcover Daybed

PB Kids

What We Like
  • Easy-to-clean slipcover design

  • Thickly padded upholstery

  • Customizable

What We Don’t Like
  • Twin size has a lower weight capacity

To accommodate even more overnight guests, opt for a daybed with a built-in trundle bed, such as the PB Kids Carter Slipcovered Daybed. The main seating area can accommodate most twin or full mattresses (sold separately). The trundle underneath can fit another twin mattress, which pulls out using smooth casters. We also like that this daybed’s upholstery is customizable, with 31 fabrics to choose from. The slipcover is also removable and is available in performance fabrics for easy upkeep.

Even before adding the mattresses, the twin-sized daybed is 195 pounds, boasting a sturdy design that'll stay in place where you need it to. The frame is made with kiln-dried wood and the legs are plastic. Plus, the entire daybed is padded for extra comfort. One thing to note, however, is that the twin-sized daybed has a weight capacity of only 300 pounds, so this may not be the best choice for adults.

Dimensions: 83.5 x 45.5 x 35.5 inches, 83.5 x 60.5 x 35.5 inches | Seat Height: 15 inches | Mattress Size: Twin, full | Materials: Kiln-dried wood, plastic legs | Upholstery: 31 options available | Trundle Included: Yes

Do you use a box spring on a daybed?

Like most modern bed frames, the majority of daybeds don't require box springs. A box spring would most likely raise the height of the mattress too much for use as a couch. The space below the frame is usually used for storage or to accommodate a trundle. Typically, a link spring or wood slats are used on the frame to support the mattress from below.

Best for Kids

West Elm Kids Lana Daybed

West Elm Kids Lana Daybed

West Elm

What We Like
  • Padded backrest for added comfort

  • Customizable

  • White-glove delivery

  • Sturdy kiln-dried solid wood frame

What We Don't Like
  • Design is more suited as a bed than seating option

For kids' bedrooms and playrooms alike, we recommend the Lana Daybed from West Elm. It has a kiln-dried solid wood frame and sturdy construction for added durability. In fact, the twin size is over 150 pounds without the mattress, making it a heavyweight furniture item that's both stable and supportive. Plus, you can choose from West Elm’s extensive upholstery catalog, which includes velvet, boucle, and even vegan leather fabrics. Just note that because of the customization options, this product will take longer to ship out than ready-to-ship options.

The daybed is filled with foam and fiber that makes it comfortable for lounging, and a backrest that wraps around the sides toward the front of the daybed for an ultra-cozy vibe. Just note that this daybed feels a bit more cocooned compared to options that aren’t partially obstructed in the front, so it may not be the best option if you’re primarily using it as a lounger. We like that the design is kid-friendly but also versatile enough that it could transition into tween, teen, or even guest room furniture. Plus, West Elm offers white-glove assembly for added convenience.

Dimensions: 88 x 46 x 41.5 inches, 88 x 60.5 x 41.5 inches | Seat Height: Not listed | Mattress Size: Twin, full | Materials: Kiln-dried solid wood frame, metal legs | Upholstery: 20 options available | Trundle Included: No

Best for Teens

Pottery Barn Teen Bailey Daybed with Trundle

Pottery Barn Teen Bailey Daybed with Trundle

Pottery Barn

What We Like
  • Stylish two-toned design

  • White-glove delivery

  • Clean and contemporary design

  • Plush upholstery

What We Don't Like
  • Lighter colors may be difficult to clean

If you're furnishing a teen bedroom, go with the Bailey Daybed from PB Teen. It has a sustainably sourced plywood and rubberwood frame and four neutral hues to match any bedroom decor. It has a two-toned design, which adds stylish contrast between the daybed frame and the trundle underneath. Just note that there’s only one performance fabric available, so lighter colors may be difficult to clean. The clean-lined backrest and armrests offer support for sitting, and the base rolls out into a trundle bed for sleepovers.

We like that the Bailey is available in a twin or full size. You can add mattresses to your order or buy them separately, but make sure the trundle mattress is no thicker than nine inches. While this made-to-order piece takes weeks to ship, Pottery Barn's white-glove delivery service includes in-home assembly. The price is steep for a teen's bed, but you can continue to use this high-quality, multi-use piece for several years to come during your empty-nester stage.

Dimensions: 84 x 45 x 40 inches, 84 x 20 x 40 inches | Seat Height: Not listed | Mattress Size: Twin, full | Materials: Plywood and rubberwood | Upholstery: Five options available | Trundle Included: Yes

Best for Small Spaces

West Elm Daybed

West Elm Shelter Daybed

West Elm

What We Like
  • Cushions double as a backrest

  • Customizable

  • White-glove delivery

  • No mattress needed

What We Don't Like
  • Inexact sleeper size

"A daybed may be good for small apartments/spaces, as it is multi-purpose," says Shallow. If you're short on square footage, West Elm's Shelter Petite Daybed might be your best bet. The smaller version is roughly the size of a twin bed, and the fiber-wrapped foam and spring bench cushion doubles as a mattress. (There's also an 86-inch option if you can fit something bigger.)

While it doesn't have a backrest, the reversible cushions can be moved to the back. This expertly designed piece has a kiln-dried hardwood frame with reinforced joinery. You can choose from 121 upholstery materials, including many performance fabrics. The Shelter Daybed will take a couple of weeks to ship, but we think the classy, long-lasting design is worth the wait.

Dimensions: 71 x 32 x 28.5 inches, 86 x 39 x 31 inches | Seat Height: 17 inches, 19 inches | Mattress Size: 63.5 x 32 inches, 78.5 x 39 inches | Materials: Kiln-dried solid oak, fiber-wrapped, high-resilience polyurethane foam cushions | Upholstery: 121 options available | Trundle Included: No

What is the difference between a futon and a daybed?

A futon converts from a couch into a bed. Futons are also available as convertible chairs if you're cramped for space. Daybeds—often available in both smaller sizes and standard twin or full sizes—do not have any mechanism to compress into a smaller form. In addition to having a head and footboard, daybeds also often have a railing on one length of the bed.

Best for Multi-Use Spaces

West Elm Jamie Slipcovered Daybed

West Elm Jamie Slipcovered Daybed

West Elm

What We Like
  • Versatile design

  • Removable slipcover

  • Lots of upholstery fabrics

What We Don’t Like
  • A bit bulkier than other options

Are you designing a guest room and home office combo, bonus room, loft, studio, or another multi-use space? Check out the refined Jamie Slipcovered Daybed from West Elm, which would match elegantly with a wide range of decor styles. It’s highly versatile and resembles a standard couch, which would fit nicely in most spaces. "You can use it as a bed for yourself or guests without having to take up too much room," says Shallow. It’s available in both twin or full sizes, and the removable slipcover comes off when it’s time for a refresh. However, note that the slipcover is dry clean only.

Choose from 54 fabrics, including velvet, linen, chenille, and boucle. It has a solid hardwood frame with mahogany legs and an overall sturdy base. It’s one of the more bulky options on this list, so take note of the size of your space before purchasing. Note that this daybed does not come with the mattress included, and like other West Elm options on this list, it comes with white-glove delivery.

Dimensions: 86 x 44 x 30.5 inches, 86 x 60 x 30.5 inches | Seat Height: Not listed | Mattress Size: Twin, full | Materials: Solid hardwood frame, mahogany legs | Upholstery: 54 options available | Trundle Included: No

Best for Corners

Kelly Clarkson Home Landis Daybed

Kelly Clarkson Home Landis Twin Daybed

Wayfair

What We Like
  • Sleigh bed-inspired design

  • Versatile look

  • Cozy velvet upholstery

What We Don't Like
  • Offers less support

  • Assembly required

If you're looking for something to fill a corner, we suggest the Landis Daybed by Kelly Clarkson Home. This sleigh bed-inspired piece comes in your choice of royal blue or dove gray velvet upholstery. It's constructed with a wood frame and a sloped back with a French-inspired design. It only has an armrest on one side, though, so just like our best overall, the Room & Board Jasper Daybed, this model may offer less support when sleeping on it.

The Landis can accommodate a twin mattress up to eight inches thick, which you'll have to buy separately. This chaise-sleeper combo has a traditional appeal and a subtle hint of glam. The price is more reasonable than other daybeds on our list, but we should note it calls for a two-person assembly and has a relatively low weight capacity of 250 pounds. However, the assembly should take no longer than 30 minutes.

Dimensions: 80 x 40 x 36 inches | Seat Height: 11.5 inches | Mattress Size: Twin | Materials: Wood frame | Upholstery: Two velvet options available | Trundle Included: No

Final Verdict

Our best overall pick is the Room & Board Jasper Daybed. Made to order with your choice of over 200 upholstery options, this multi-functional piece is comfortable, supportive, and endlessly versatile. But if you want something with a proper backrest that can sleep an extra overnight guest, go with the best with trundle PB Kids Carter Slipcover Daybed.

What to Consider When Buying a Daybed

Mattress Size

Daybeds typically come in at least two sizes to accommodate people of all ages and sizes. While often seen with a twin mattress, there are options with full-size mattresses that are an excellent choice for teen or adult sleepers. In fact, both The PB Teen Bailey Daybed (our best for teens pick) and West Elm's Lana Daybed (our best for kids pick) are available in twin and full sizes. Of course, a larger mattress translates into a larger sleeper, so make sure you have the square footage for whichever size you're considering.

Included Trundle

A daybed for one overnight guest is nice to have, but a daybed with a trundle can provide accommodation for at least two visitors at a moment's notice. Our best with trundle pick is the PB Kids Carter Slipcover Daybed, which has a pull-out trundle bed neatly stored underneath the upper mattress. Just know that many daybeds with trundles don’t come with a second mattress—you might need to purchase it separately.

Assembly

While some daybeds with metal frames and minimal components are quick to assemble, other versions will present a worthy challenge to DIY furniture builders. Daybeds with trundles, headboards, and additional storage or parts may be difficult and have you tracking washers, bolts, and nuts.

For more complicated assemblies, you may want to consider opting for white-glove delivery, which comes included when purchasing from certain retailers. Our favorite options that come with white-glove delivery include our best for teens pick, The PB Teen Bailey Daybed, and our best splurge pick, the Interior Define Asher Leather Daybed.

If you're not up for a time-consuming set-up but don't want to pay a premium, look for a day bed with a simple frame, a backless design, or something that arrives pre-assembled. Our best for corners pick, the Kelly Clarkson Home Landis Daybed, boasts a quick and straightforward assembly if you want to save on both time and added costs.

Material

For durability purposes, we recommend purchasing a daybed with a metal or kiln-dried wood frame. These will likely last you the longest and can withstand consistent use. Specifically, our best budget Vecelo Classic Metal Daybed is made with a fully metal frame, which may not feel the most comfortable but is highly durable. Or, the best with trundle pick, the PB Kids Carter Slipcover Daybed, is made with kiln-dried wood to prevent warping and also has cushioned padding.

In terms of upholstery, you'll want to consider how often you'll be using and sleeping on your daybed when choosing a fabric. There are lots of customizable options on the market that offer performance fabrics, such as the best overall Room & Board Jasper Daybed and the West Elm Shelter Daybed (our best for small spaces pick). Performance fabrics are designed to hold up to everyday wear and tear, which may be especially helpful for households with kids and pets.
