Modern style gained momentum around the turn of the 20th century in the European Bauhaus schools, which focused on merging craft with industry. Scandinavian designers also helped launch Modernism by stressing minimalism, mass production and simple, functional furnishings.
Designers important to the history and development of the modernist movement include Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto, Walter Gropius and Louis Kahn.
