If your collections and accessories seem more like clutter than a part of your decorating style, you can change them from a decor minus into a design plus. Just follow these simple steps:
- Odd numbers. Try to group your accessories in odd numbers - three or five is a perfect number.
- Vary size. Vary the sizes of the pieces you use. Don't group all similar sizes together. Vary the heights and widths within the grouping.
- Vary numbers. Vary the number of pieces according to the design style. A contemporary room should have less groupings than a traditional or country room.
- Visual impact. Accessorize a small room with collections that have more visual impact when viewed up close. Collections like photos and small music boxes work well in a small room. Larger rooms can be accessorized with items that have a larger presence when viewed from afar, such as mirrors, art or furniture.
- Symmetry. A symmetrical arrangement works best in a formal space with more traditional furnishings. If your room is casual and contemporary, an asymmetrical arrangement might work best.
- Similarity. Unite accessories of different sizes and shapes by similar colors or materials. For instance, vintage glass bottles of differing shapes or sizes can make a wonderful arrangement. An arrangement of mid-century kitchen accessories in red can add drama and fun to a wall.
- Interesting pieces. When you are choosing an accessory for your room, ask yourself: "Would I consider this piece interesting if it were the only accessory in the room?" If so, keep it! If not, discard it!
Following these simple rules can help you organize those cluttered collections into a visual focal point. And best of all - it's inexpensive!
