The holidays are a wonderful time of year to decorate. Decor is plentiful and can be purchased very inexpensively. Plus, holiday decorating and seasonal decor adds a festive look to a home that puts one into holiday spirits.

We interviewed a several interior design experts to discover what they believe will be the top trends in holiday decorating. Their simple yet stylish tips will help you enhance your home and your holiday decor throughout this season. Happy holidays… and happy decorating!

Embrace a Neutral Color Palette
Many designers recommend skipping the typical holiday color explosion and going with a sophisticated color scheme of neutral colors. One designer mentioned, “A simple and classic neutral color palette gives the holidays a timeless look and an ability to grow with your decor.”

Instead of a rich, saturated color scheme, add holiday warmth through texture and scent. To incorporate this look, make the foundation of your holiday decor neutral colors such as creams, grays, soft greens and khakis. If you desire a more traditional look, incorporate the holiday’s brighter colors as accents.

Get Back to Nature
Faux pine seems to be fading fast. Many of our designers have noticed a recent surge in seasonal decorating with live greenery and natural elements such as pinecones, acorns, feathers, deer antlers and other items that speak to the fresh fall outdoors.

Another beautiful thing about items found in nature is that no two are exactly alike. It keeps things from looking “store bought” and imparts a unique look to your holiday decor. For a fresh new look on a budget, add greenery sprigs, preserved botanicals and other items found in nature to existing decor.

Let Technology Take a Load Off
Technology is taking over the holidays and taking a load off of a lot of the decorating process and upkeep. Dimmers and timed switches are popular. Pre-lit garland and Christmas trees are also the way to go.

A popular item this year is a battery-operated scented candle that looks just like a flickering candle that comes complete with a timer that turns on and off at the same time each day. Outdoor and indoor lights set to timers make this task mindless during the holidays, allowing one to enjoy their holiday decorations even more.

Make the Old New Again
Designers and storeowners have also noticed an increase in the desire for vintage items and eco-friendly decor. Thankfully, these two desires go hand-in-hand perfectly. Reusing and repurposing older items not only adds a unique charm to the home during the holiday season, but it also keeps these bygone items in use and out of the landfill.

Small antique toys, photographs and even household utensils can make delightful Christmas tree ornaments or can be attached to wreaths and garland. Considering repurposing older items like embroidery hoops, metal cookie cutters, or even old wooden rulers into pretty little holiday photo frames. These refashioned and repurposed items can also make great holiday gifts.

Let It Be You
Whatever you choose to decorate your home with this holiday season, it should reflect your family’s character, wishes and lifestyle. After all, a trend isn’t trendy if it doesn’t work for you. Embrace wherever your life is during this busy season and make time to enjoy it. After all, home is where the heart is, and that is what the holidays are all about.
