Though often overlooked, tree skirts are a holiday staple that finish off the look your Christmas tree nicely—and it helps to hide that massive tree stand! While there's plenty of complicated patterns for tree skirts out there that involve hemming and sewing on buttons, this version is simple and doesn't require a single stitch.

Tip

Avoiding using felt or fleece to make the tree skirt, as both fabrics attract dirt, dust, and pet hair that can collect on the floor. As for the size of the fabric, it really will depend on the size of your tree. Buy at least 2 yards of fabric and cut it down to size.

  1. Measure and Cut Your Fabric

Fold the fabric in half and use the chalk to draw a half-circle. The larger you make the half-circle, the larger your tree skirt will be. The great part about using chalk is that it comes off nice and easy if you mess up! Once you're satisfied with the circular shape, cut it out. Then, fold your fabric in half again and then cut out a small circle in the center corner. This is where the base of the tree will fit.

Unfold the fabric, so it's flat, and then cut a slit from the outside of the circle to the inside circle. This will make it easier to wrap it around the tree.

  2. Hem the Edges

"Hem" is sort of a loose term in this case because you're not actually hemming the fabric edges. Instead, use hem tape along the edges of the tree skirt, which allows you to fold the fabric over to create a hem. Work your way around the outside edge of the tree skirt, then do the edge of the slit and the inside circle. Take your time and work slowly. The hem might not be perfect, but that's OK—you're going to be covering it with decorative trim.

  3. Apply the Trim

You can use pom pom fringe, regular pom poms, or even felted pom poms! —depending on what look you're going for. Here, use hot glue to affix different sized pom poms to the bottom edge of the tree skirt.
