Easy Furniture Makeovers - No Hammer Required!
As most of you know, I may be many things - dumpster diva or trashy designer - but none of them is handy with a hammer! Don’t get me wrong, the hammer loves me. In fact, it is so attracted to me that it unerringly heads for my fingers despite my best efforts to dissuade it! So makeovers for old furniture in my house are made with imagination, not tools. If you suffer from the same affliction, have I got some ideas for YOU!
- Remember decoupage? (yes, I’m THAT old!) Why not try decoupaging an old lamp or small wood chair? But I warn you. Depending on your taste in fabric, it will either look fabulous or incredibly tacky!
- Want a new headboard? Attach a curtain rod (yes, you will need a screwdriver!) behind your bed. Drape the rod with a wide fabric, hanging it like a towel over the rod.
- Put your best idea under your feet! Recover an old footstool with a fabric remnant. You can either staple on the underside or use that super-duper new tape that will hold the fabric tight unseen under the stool.
- Cover an old table top with tile, decoupage, or chalkboard paint.
- There is something to be said for the simple elegance of an impromptu slipcover. Hide the old eyesore under a beautiful sheet or fabric remnant. Sometimes its best out of sight and out of mind!
Your imagination can solve a myriad of decorating problems if you just try your idea with confidence. Don't worry about the design being ugly. Remember all of the abominably ugly design ideas we have fallen for in the past (think flocked velvet wallpaper, cottage cheese ceilings, and avocado green appliances) just because someone with confidence and an accent told us it was “Fabulous, Dahling!” Your abominibly ugly idea just might be the next “in” thing!
